Photographer Information

I took photography classes from Professor Jimmy Bedford at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and took many scenic pictures throughout Alaska from 1970 to 1975. Alaska is a great place for photography (very clear air and great lighting).

My ambition in Alaska during the 70's was to be a freelance photographer. I took pictures for the local Fairbanks newspapers and sold pictures in the tourist shops. I had one picture published in Alaska Magazine and one in Scientific American. I won best picture of show in the Alaska State Fair. I also sold a series of Aurora Borealis slides to Arctic Circle Enterprises for a grand total of $50 and no commission (I was a struggling college student). They sold in Alaska gift shops for many years and might be selling today for all I know (I probably could have retired on the money they brought in). One of my Aurora Borealis pictures was presented to the late, great Bob Hope at a USO show in Fairbanks 1971.

Despite these encouraging events, I soon discovered that I could not make a living having so much fun, so I got my degree in Electronics and eventually established a career writing and selling computer software.

I lived in Washington State from 1975 to 2000 and took many pictures throughout the state. I also traveled to Maine for the fall colors.

Now residing in the Austin, Texas area, my current obsession is panoramic photography.

I use a Nikon D100 digital camera (all pictures taken after March 2003 are with the D100). The sharpness of the pictures produced from this camera is incredible. For panoramic shots, I mount the camera on a tripod with a custom-built mounting that allows me to take the pictures at precise angles. I pan the camera across the scene taking several pictures, which I then splice
together using Photoshop on a Macintosh computer. For standard-size prints, I use an Epson 2200 printer. The entire process of taking the pictures, splicing them together, correcting color balance and brightness between pictures, and then printing takes approximately 8 hours; the results are quite satisfying.

Print sizes and prices vary: standard sizes are 24" to 44" wide and 8" to 13" high, and are priced at $39.95 to $59.95. Special order large prints can be up to 6' wide or even more; call for price quote.
