TCP/IP Telnet Info

Using MacWise on a
Network with TCP/IP

We recommend using MacWise version 18 or later for OS X (telnet is built in)

For OS 9 or earlier...

What software do I need?

1. MacWise version 4
2. TCP/IP Control Panel using Open Transport (or MacTCP Control Panel version 2.04 or later for older Macs)
3. A Telnet Tool

What is Open Transport?

All newer classic Macintosh computers used Open Transport instead of MacTCP.
Open Transport has a control panel called TCP/IP. You enter the IP address of your Mac into the TCP/IP control panel.

It is installed into the Control Panels folder inside of the System Folder on the Mac.

It is included free with Macintosh System 7.5.2 or later

What is MacTCP and where do I get it?

MacTCP is a control panel used on older Macs prior to System 7.5.2.

It is installed into the Control Panels folder inside of the System Folder on the Mac.

You enter the IP address of your Mac into MacTCP.

It is included free with Macintosh System 7.5.

What is a Telnet Tool and where do I get it?

The Telnet Tool is used to enter the IP address of the host and establish a connection.

It is a CommToolBox extension that is installed into the Extensions folder inside of the System Folder on the Mac. After the tool has been installed, you select New Connection from the CommToolBox menu and select the telnet tool from the popup Method menu.

Download a Free Macintosh Telnet Tool.
(May not work with fast G4 Macs or OS 9 but does work with OS 9 under OS X)

It is also available for downloading from many Online services and the Internet.

See our Support page for known problems with the TGE tool.

What is a SSH Secure Shell Connection?

(An optional method of connecting to your host with secure encryption)

Important Note About Terminal Types

When you do a New Connection from the CommToolBox Menu and select the telnet tool (TGE or Versaterm Tool), you will need to enter a terminal type. If you leave this field blank, your host will assume that you are using vt100 emulation when you log in.

Just setting the emulation type under the Emulation Menu is not enough to satisfy the host. You need to select the correct emulation and also enter the terminal type in the telnet tool.

The following are standard terminal types that you can enter:

wy50

wy60

vp

viewpoint

vt100

fwycol (for Xymox hosts)

If none of these types work, consult your host computer documentation to see what your host supports.
